Lack of Motivation

lack-of-motivation

I have an incredible ability to to shift from high motivation levels to a complete lack of motivation in the blink of an eye.  For the last 2 weeks I have been battling with my inner “demons”.  Should I sleep or should I run? Should I go home and hang out with my children (who I miss) or should I go run 10 miles?  Sometimes I get sick of the battle.   That’s why I signed up for the marathon, so I would stay motivated.  Well that’s not working too well.

I am late on my weekly blog post because I haven’t been running as much as I should.  I am not even sure I enjoy training as much as I feel the need to run to maintain my identity.  Ugh….why did I sign up for this race?  Obviously I need to reevaluate my reasons for continuing to punish myself with intense training., but now is not the time I have a marathon to get ready for…so bring on the pep talk folks because I am not feeling it.

Another week (or 2) in the books.  Unlike the last few weeks this week I had my first setback.  I have yet to figure out the psychological side of running.  I know (and preach) moderation and listening to your body but sometimes there is more to it than that.   Listening to your body means making sure you are not pushing yourself too hard too often.  What if you are feeling great every day and the effort feels easy?  Even if you feel fantastic on your runs sometimes you need to force yourself to back off.   Even with all of the cross training I was burning the candle at both ends.  I will turn this around.

Monday:  Cross Training 30 minutes on Spinning Bike followed by 2 x full body circuit at gym.  Sore from yesterday’s run.

Tuesday:  10 miles @ 7:03 per mile.  Looked at the watch at mile 1 and it read 7:17. At this point I knew I was going to throw down against the clock.  I blasted over the hills relaxed and floated through Granby… I checked my watch at 8 miles and it wasn’t any faster than last week (the watch must be broken). I finished up and checked my time and it was not any faster than the last time I ran it, but the effort was much greater….hmmmmmm

Wednesday- Saturday: you guessed it, I am sick . No Cross training or running. I am exhausted (go figure).  Here is the lesson for all of you kids out there.  Keep your training in check. I ran very hard for about 10 straight runs and it caught up to me.  Training is about moderation and staying well within your “zone”.    Look I missed 4 days of training because I wanted to be a workout hero…what an idiot.

Sunday:  15-16 miles @ 8:00 min pace. Ran on the trails so the distance (and pace) is off.  The goal was 2 hours and I got it.  Felt fantastic until 1:51 (again!@#$$).  Of course I had nothing to eat.  I really need to start fueling for the runs that will be extended in the coming weeks.  Stay smart and healthy.

Monday:  5.5 miles easy with B. Walsh. Felt fine.

Tuesday:  Cross Training 30 minutes on the bike followed by weight training (legs, core). Felt tired (again).

Friday :  Thank you for good friends.  Timmy called me last night and noticed my training was slipping.  He knocked on my door at 6:10 AM and we rocked a 9.5-10.0 mile run.(7:30 per mile)   Tim’s great grandfather wrote the Ellery Queen novels…pretty amazing … http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellery_Queen.  Felt good today but only because of the great company and conversation.

Saturday: 3 miles of easy jogging just to get ready for tomorrow’s long run.

Sunday:  17 miles in  2hours 8 minutes.  Today I ate breakfast and took a Cliff Gel at 12 miles.  The wheels fell of at about 15.5 miles. I was dying.  This was  a wake up call for me, I need to start taking training seriously (and run more) if I want to feel good during this race.   Note to self 17 miles is far and not that enjoyable…oh and by the you have to run 9 mor emiles for the race.

Bean Stew

bean-stew

The forecast was yucky for the weekend and the weather man finally got it right. Sunday it poured all day at my house. I was looking for something cozy and warm…. comfort food :)   I was browsing my favorite vegetarian, clean eating web site, 101cookbooks.com and found one of my favorite stews.  I soaked the beans on Saturday and they were ready for the soup on Sunday morning.  Check out the site, it has a lot of great grain recipes. And here is the link to the stew.

Is Friday the beginning or the end for you?

is-friday-the-beginning-or-the-end-for-you

Sugar:  So when I think about Fridays I have mixed feelings.  Weird, I know, who doesn’t love a Friday?  But the thing is after blowing through my food goals this week, thanks to the Peppermint Patty fiasco….I look at Friday as the road that can go two ways….first road…is the what the heck, I blew it already so I might as well go out with a bang and really have food fun this weekend and then start again on Monday  or….. today is the day! My chance to start clean, healthy living…I’ll be out of the office for the weekend so I will have time to detox and load myself up with fruits, veggies and be prepared to fight a better fight on Monday!

Spice:  I say it’s all about balance. How many Peppermint Patties did you eat?  Here’s how I do it.  Say that a co-worker brings in cookies his mother in law made.  Would I eat one?  Oh Yeah!  Would I feel guilty?  Nah!  Why?  Because I would say, “Hey, I only ate a yogurt for breakfast, which is only 140 calories….and I’ll have low calorie frozen meal for lunch which is 240 calories…so it’s all good!”

By the way, I do tend to start things on Mondays.  Projects, diets, being nice to my husband again…all begins on Mondays for me.

Sugar: Well as for the number of PP’s I had…let’s not go there. But you’re right it is all about the balance…..hmmm what to have for lunch to balance the homemade snickers cookie bar from that same mother in law mentioned earlier?  I know, two almonds and a banana!  Got it…I’m on my way to a great Friday!

How’s your weekend going to be?  Any great plans that may get you off course?  What’s your tip for staying in balance? Please share with us, Sugar-n-Spice~~

Not So Rugged

not-so-rugged

I noticed that the last few weeks I have let up on my training, heck I’ve been down right slacking off.

The other night at my work out I was going through the passes when it came to me. October 2nd will be here sooner than I think. So while running n a circle and in between push up drills. I started to re motivate myself.

I started thinking “Rugged Maniac, Rugged Maniac, Rugged Maniac”. I started imagining I was running the course. Usually during these warm ups I try pacing myself for the next hour and a half of possible squats, push ups, fighting drills or whatever else my intstructor has in mind.   It wasn’t long before I found myself trying a little harder, going a little faster and pushing myself more.

Every now and then we may find ourselves off track. Find your way back.

Spicy Life

spicy-life

If it’s true and variety really is the spice of life, then my work out life is seriously zesty!

I remind people often that I don’t love running, I love the Marine Corps – a reference to my constant training in an attempt to post a strong finish in the Marine Corps Marathon this Halloween.

Having somehow missed the running addiction I can say I look for cross training opportunities all the time.  Most Wednesdays I share a personal training session with my pal – she is a complete hard core work out maniac, and even though she looks like a princess I know the truth…she loves throwing heavy things around just as much as I do!

Today’s workout OWNED ME.  Seriously left me tired to the core.  But there we were high-fiving about our chin up progress.  Listen, I’m not exactly young, and certainly not hanging with the fitness elite…but chin ups??  How cool is that?

Having a work out buddy is essential when your goal is lofty.  Lofty and clear.  And audacious.  Thank you work out buddy!

The Year that was and the Year that WILL BE

the-year-that-was-and-the-year-that-will-be

When my children were younger we always celebrated our New Year’s holiday the night before the school year started.  We set the dining room table, pulled out the finest the china cabinet had to offer and lit some candles.  It was one of the few times we lingered…and talked…and dreamed over dinner.   The kids and I offered up all the reasons to be thankful for a happy, healthy summer….and made plans for the new school year.  For me, this was far more compelling than the traditional January 1st list of resolutions.

There may be no lingering dining room chat about summer vacation and school plans this year, but that doesn’t mean I won’t celebrate my NEW YEAR.  Why wait to plan the YEAR THAT WILL BE?  Think about the year that is.  The year that was.  Did you plan to make things happen differently?  Did you get the results you wanted?

As the aroma of new backbacks fill your home like a spritz of Febreze….capture some of the back to school spirit and make some time to revist and ramp up your resolutions.  Resolve to impact your health and happiness by getting more exercise, eating better, playing more!  Pick strong reasons and strong actions will follow.  Just think – if you start now you will have a  four month jump on that other New Year!

Welcome to Sugar & Spice:

welcome-to-sugar-spice

Who are we?  Well we are two brilliant & dynamic individuals (okay two forty-something year old moms) at HNE that felt we have something to share.  We wanted to do a blog about food/nutrition/lifestyle with sarcasm and raw reality mixed in. Or in simpler terms… thoughts infused with wisdom & wit.

Just by chit chatting with each other we realized how many moments we have had in common.  Is that unique to us two?  Nah!  They way we see it, many women out there go through what we do, day in and day out, month in and month out. Okay truth be told we have spent years on some situations in our life.   We just figured we would talk about it ALL out loud on-line.

We expect to touch on some topics such as:

  • Monday morning diets
  • Navigating the chocolate minefield at work
  • Feeding your vegetarian child while the rest of the house wants steak
  • Finding what to wear that goes with Spanx
  • Slim fast and a sensible dinner
  • What diets haven’t you tried
  • What does your CVS loyalty card coupons say about you

And the list could go on and on.  But enough about us…we want to hear from you!  See any topic that you would like to hear about?  What’s missing on our list?  Let us know because whatever “it” is, you can rest assure one of us will be able to say “been there, done that!”

Until next time….eat the cherries but please leave the Reese peanut butter cup alone.
